The first D&D Direct aired last week! It was a great presentation with lots of announcements regarding upcoming D&D products and tie-ins. You can watch the presentation here.
Let’s recap the D&D product announcements!
Spelljammer confirmed
The highly anticipated setting from previous D&D editions, Spelljammer, is coming to 5th edition! With Spelljammer: Adventures in Space, we’re actually getting three books:
- Astral Adventurer’s Guide, which contains new player options
- Boo’s Astral Menagerie, a bestiary with new monsters
- Light of Xaryxis, a campaign from levels 1 to 14 with twelve “episodes”
The new player options include the astral elves, autognomes, hadozee, giff, plasmoids, and thri-kreen, which we saw for playtesting in Unearthed Arcana.
The bestiary contains some fun new monsters like vampirates, space clowns, and solar and lunar dragons.
Light of Xaryxis takes place on the Astral Sea in “Wildspace,” a Spelljammer term that seems to refer to space not belonging any particular planet. Think “the open sea” for a naval synonym.
These are coming in August, but an introductory adventure will be available for those with a Wizards account in July. 10 new Spelljammer-flavored monsters are available now on D&D Beyond in Monstrous Compendium Vol 1: Spelljammer Creatures.
Journeys through the Radiant Citadel
Coming in June is a new adventure anthology for characters levels 1 to 14. Journeys through the Radiant Citadel contains thirteen unique adventures connected to the Radiant Citadel, a city that acts as a crossroads on the Ethereal Plane.
These adventures have a variety of tones and draw inspiration from a variety of cultures. Notably, this anthology was entirely written by writers of color!
The anthology also features eleven new monsters and maps that go to each adventure.
Journeys through the Radiant Citadel arrives June 21st.
Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
A new starter set was announced, titled Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. This set will contain pregenerated characters, an adventure, dice, and rules you need to get started playing Dungeons & Dragons. The adventure takes place on the eponymous Stormwreck Isle, and the player characters will find themselves involved in a conflict between dragons.
This starter set will be widely available October 4th, but you can find it at Targets in North America starting August 1st.
Dragonlance also confirmed
A new adventure set in the world of Dragonlance is coming! It’s titled Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen and will be the first official 5th edition product taking place in this setting.
Accompanying it is Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn, a tabletop battle game. Interestingly, it seems that the board game can be integrated into the Dragonlance campaign itself for facilitating large-scale battles.
Some Dragonlance-themed options have appeared in Unearthed Arcana as of late, so it will be exciting to see the potential for official versions of these options!
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen and Dragonlance: Warriors of Kyrnn are coming late 2022.
Exciting news all around! What was your favorite announcement from the D&D Direct?
