I was surprised to see a new Unearthed Arcana article, and which this subject matter at that! The new UA, Heroes of Krynn, introduces playtest options from the Dragonlance setting.

Here we have a new player character option, a new sorcerer subclass, two new backgrounds, and a handful of feats.

Kender

The kender are small humanoids with pointed ears and a reputation for curiosity. They may have a connection to the Feywild.

Kender traits include a resistance to the frightened condition, a taunt (like a non-damaging vicious mockery), and the Kender Ace feature. Kender Ace kicks in at 3rd level. It enables you to pull out a random item (from the Kender Aces table) from a container you hold.

The Kender Ace ability looks like it could be a lot of fun, especially for comic relief or—if you’re very lucky—producing just the right object at the right moment. The kender seems like a great option for players looking for a more whimsical character option! They are right at home among halflings and gnomes.

Sorcerous Origin: Lunar Magic

Sorcerers with the Lunar Magic subclass draw their magic from the energy of the moon in all its changeable forms.

On a long rest or through other conditions, you can change what phase of the moon you channel: Full Moon, New Moon, or Crescent Moon. These three phases allow you to access different effects with your subclass features. Full Moon is associated with light and healing, while New Moon is the opposite. Crescent Moon is linked with the border between light and dark.

This subclass looks great for those who want more flexibility and options for their sorcerer! The moon theming can fit well into any campaign as well.

Backgrounds

There are two new backgrounds: the Knight of Solamnia and the Mage of High Sorcery. Both backgrounds offer personality traits, trinkets, and suggestions to help flavor your character and tie them to the world of Dragonlance.

These backgrounds give you access to one of the feats presented later—Knight of Solamnia grants the Squire of Solamnia feat and Mage of High Sorcery grants Initiate of High Sorcery.

These remind me of the background in Strixhaven. It’s definitely not mandatory to play in the setting, but it’s an easy way to connect your character to the broader context of the world.

Feats

These feats enable you to customize your character in a Dragonlance setting. I think with a bit of homebrew, you could adapt these feats for your own setting as well—especially if you have a knightly order and an organization of mages in your setting.

After you take the initial Squire or Initiate feat, you can further specialize your character with, for example, the Knight of the Rose feat or the Adept of the Red Robes feat. These feats all have certain prerequisites beyond just having the initial feats. The knight feats all require you to be 4th level or higher, and the mage order feats have an additional alignment requirement (such as being a non-evil or non-good alignment).

The Divinely Favored and Divine Communications feats reflects power granted to you by a deity whose favor you’ve earned. I think these two feats could be adapted outside of Dragonlance with minimal reworking.

Feats are a great way to further customize your character both mechanically and in-world, so I think these new feat options would do well for whatever future Dragonlance plans WotC has. I’m interested to see what comes of this!
