The party discovers the crystal connecting the Material Plane to whatever unknown place the star spawn came from. They fight off the creatures guarding the crystal, but when the crystal is destroyed, an unexpected tragedy strikes…

In these Campaign Diary posts, I talk about the campaign I play in and our most recent session!

About SBotLL

SBotLL is the campaign I play in that has been running for over five years now. There are two parties: one mostly good-aligned party that started on the surface, and one mostly evil-aligned party that started in the Underdark.

The good-aligned party includes these characters:

  • Finnith (me), high elf bard/rune scribe
  • Nala, dragonborn rogue
  • Allora, tiefling/elf ranger

It also includes Allora’s animal companion, Frikka the bear, plus the NPCs Amuulqalo and Rupert.

The evil-aligned party includes these characters:

  • Eliera, dark elf/high elf ranger/warlock
  • Cipher, changeling rogue/mystic (currently operating as a human named Albion)
  • Baala’rug, tiefling monk

This group also includes Eliera’s animal companion, Artemis the dire wolf, plus the NPCs Naivara, Ivellios, and Daear (played by me).

Recap

Last time, the group investigated the meteor blocking the river. The meteor seems to be the source of the star spawn. They plan to finish their investigations within the day so that they can return to their original objective—reaching Vindus’ realm to go to the Shadowfell where Finnith and Daear have been taken.

In these past two sessions…

The group reconvenes and discusses their findings. Baala’rug and Nala located a tunnel underwater that seemed to lead inside the meteor. With Eliera’s water breathing spell, the whole group is able to dive below and follow the tunnel.

Eventually they reach a part of the passage that has air instead of water inside. They follow the passage deeper and discover a cavern with a large purple crystal growing out of the stone. When Eliera and Allora go to investigate the crystal, several star spawn teleport in and attack.

A battle ensues, and the star spawn push the group to their limits. However, the group is able to successfully fight them off.

The next issue is that of the crystal. It is most likely the source of the connection between the Material Plane and the star spawn’s realm. Amuulqalo volunteers to attempt to destroy it, using a powerful spell, but when the crystal begins to break, the energy within destabilizes. Allora sends her animal companion, Frikka, to try and protect him from the blast. Amuulqalo uses an unknown power to contain the energy and suddenly disappears with the crystal and with Frikka.

But Allora feels Frikka die. And sending and other means of locating Amuulqalo seem to fail. As sudden as it is, it seems that Amuulqalo is either dead or very, very far away…

The remaining good squad members are frustrated, shocked, and lost. The evil squad members aren’t all very good with emotions, but they all return to camp. Allora leaves to perform the ritual to bring Frikka back. Eliera goes to talk to her, and Nala sleeps. Thus the group must take a pause before returning to their journey… and who knows what the truth may be?
