In this SBotLL session, tensions run high as the party tries to plan for the upcoming battle.
In these Campaign Diary posts, I discuss the campaign I play in and what happened in our most recent session!
What’s SBotLL?
That’s the name of the campaign I play in! It’s been running for four years now. There are two parties, one on the Surface and one in the Underdark. I play in the surface squad as the elf bard Finnith, and my two friends play the dragonborn rogue Nala and the tiefling ranger Allora.
Recap
Last session, Finnith and Nala found the missing Moon’s Eye members and returned to the Awoken Flame. Both groups are coordinating in preparation for the Coven of Eternal Light’s attack in a little over a month. Allora, Finnith, and Nala catch each other up on what’s happened, and they intend to start their own preparations as well.
In this session…
Everyone is pretty tense the next morning, because it is time to plan, and the good squad doesn’t have a good history of planning things. But now that Allora is the leader of the Awoken Flame, she has a responsibility to these people.
The group decides to speak with the Moon’s Eye and some of the other Awoken Flame tieflings to start training combatants and setting up a safe place to move noncombatants to before the battle occurs.
They also speak with Vindus and learn that they can receive more power from him if they make a weeklong trip to the Gray Crescent Mountains and place a crystal there that would expand his influence. Because Vindus was a god that died, his presence is not as bound up in the world as others, so his influence needs to be expanded before he can dispense more power. He also reminds the party that they may be overlooking the power within themselves.
After some thinking and History checks, the party remembers their encounters with the mirror-selves, entities that represent a part of them. For each character, there are two—one who challenges their resolve, and another who represents things they must come to terms with. They haven’t completely resolved matters with those “selves,” so the party realizes they may have to do that. (It is not a happy realization)
So, as Allora sits in her tent, and Finnith walks through the woods, they both hear voices much like their own…
Revealing Campaign Secrets
This has been a long-running campaign with lots of mysteries. After running in circles and finding out some stuff about the mirror selves on our own, the DM let us in on more information about them. This didn’t ruin the surprise or dampen our enthusiasm, rather, it helped us understand what’s been going on with the mirror selves. And now that we understand some of the structure behind who the mirror selves are, it’s more exciting to see how that plays out for each character moving forward.
